Positive Education – Curriculum

The school has a designated curriculum aligned to our Positive Education – HAPEER Model with six wellbeing domains, as well as the Personal and Social Capabilities: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness and Social Management.

Social Skills

Warnbro CHS Education Support Centre has a whole school approach to developing student’s social language and social competency. This involves the explicit teaching of social language (pragmatics). The school offers support through the Wellbeing Team for students requiring additional support.

We recognise that friendships and making connections with others is fundamental for our students. To support this, the school has developed an after-school Friendship Program with support from the schools Speech-Language Pathologist and Occupational Therapist.

The school has a strong focus on maximising student engagement and offering a rich and innovation curriculum which maximises student outcomes. Extensive use of cooperative learning and the explicit teaching of social and emotional skills is the key.

Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies (PATHS)

PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) is a social and emotional program. The aim of this program is to raise students’ awareness of their emotions, build a language to describe their emotions, develop self-control and develop problem solving skills. This program provides students with lifelong skills which will assist them in their everyday lives.

Character Strengths

Underpinning the model of Positive Education is a strengths approach. For students to flourish and perform at their best Warnbro CHS Education Support Centre takes a strengths perspective, as each student has unique abilities and capacities. Strengths have important benefits for wellbeing and contribute to success in important life domains (Peterson & Seligman, 2004).

The school has a strong focus on both academic achievement and social and emotional development. Warnbro CHS Education Support Centre has developed a character strengths program where the school has identified six key character strengths required for an organisation/group to flourish. These character strengths are:

  • GRATITUDE
  • TEAMWORK
  • CURIOSITY
  • HOPE
  • ZEST
  • KINDNESS

Mindfulness Program

Warnbro CHS Education Support Centre views Mindfulness as purposefully paying attention, in a non-judgemental way to what one is experiencing. The school believes that Mindfulness has the capacity to improve the student’s ability to think and improve wellbeing.

Protective Behaviours

Our students participate in a comprehensive and intensive Protective Behaviours program from year 7 to year 13. The program includes independent living skills and personal safety which aims to strengthen the resilience of students and ensure their safety as they grow and develop. As students reach the senior years, they follow the Growing and Developing Healthy Relationships Program. Students also access health programs which target sex education, healthy eating and lifestyle education.

Resilience

As part of the schools Positive Education Model – HAPEER, the school has incorporated the Friendly Schools Curriculum. The School uses Friendly Schools Curriculum to increase understanding and awareness of bullying; improve communication about bullying; foster adaptive responses to bullying; encourage peer and adult support for students who are bullied; and promote peer and adult discouragement of bullying behaviour. The initiative also addresses research suggesting that the development of qualities like resilience, positive self-esteem, empathy, social skills, self-management skills, decision-making skills and conflict resolution can help to protect students from the harmful effects of bullying.
